As promised, here are more of the vintage cards that my mom got when she was hosptialized in the 50's. I'm not sure how to write that without making it appear that people sent my mom vintage cards. They were new when they were sent to her. 50 years has passed since then, and now they are vintage. This set is themed "humorous animals"
This one has an impressive number of fold outs.
Lots and lots of fold outs and each one has its own little rhyme. I find myself thinking how expensive this must have been to produce. Difficult printing and cutting set up. Probably don't see many cards like this anymore for that very reason.
And I guess funny cards are often sent to convalescents, as laughter is supposed to be the best medicine...
...though I might consider this slightly insensitive given the nature of her injury. (She did, literally, break her back).
I like his handkerchief, and that they went to the trouble of illustrating its reflection in the tear puddle.
Aaaand the ubiquitous skunk. Skunks were without a doubt the humour animal of the 50's.
I also like the 'comic handwriting' font. Makes me want to go back to school and do a super obscure design degree and become a font historian.
I'm not really sure if humour is really the way to go when its such a major injury...
All of these plucky injured animals, might be more comic if you weren't actually in a body cast.
Cute. Alluding to hospitalization as captivity. Though I'll bet back in the 50's they served real food instead of the tang and poorly heated up canned stew that you get now. Anyhow, this one is my favourite. And too long to fit on the scanner.
Aw, see, the little mouse wants you to feel like a million. And also, he himself has not had to be injured in order to make you feel better. I prefer it that way. This one was also the Little Dude's favourite, along with the pink bunny in a cast, who got carried around the house for a couple of days. He quite likes the injured animals, though I have to make up the story of how they got injured and tell it to him repeatedly. Toddlers are all about the repetition.
Soooooo awesome!
