I should have posted about this on what I'm told was international Star Wars day, that is May the 4th (May the fourth be with you... get it....) but I just didn't get around to it. Its a little quilting project that I finished aaaaaages ago, but have been holding off on posting about, because it was made as a gift for a friend of mine who is expecting her first baby, and I had to wait till she received it, before I could post. Anyhow, just a little while ago she and her husband have welcomed their lovely little boy, and so now, I can show you this:
The Star Wars Baby Quilt. Made primarily from vintage Star Wars bed sheets. I have such a soft spot in my heart for these bed sheets, and I buy them any chance I get. My friend who had the baby thrifted this particular set (two different styles), and asked me to make her a quilt from them, as I had done it once before. Here is the original Star Wars Baby Quilt that I made, so you can compare and contrast them:
My friend wanted one that was more simple in terms of colour, so for hers I went with the solid Navy with no red detail.
Whereas, in the original one, I used the turquoise and added a few red zips.
For version A, I also had these awesome 80's Star Wars sheets that had these black and white half-tone realistic images of the actors from the movie (see Obi Wan Kenobi above) which I just loved, but did not have any more of for the version B quilt.
I also made up a quick blankie for my friend, just a layer of navy blue cotton flannel, backed with a solid chuck of the Star Wars sheet. Here's an image so you can see both backings. The one on the left is the quilt.
When I backed the original version A, I did not have a second Star Wars sheet, so I used a vintage space themed sheet, probably from the early 60's.
I love this sheet so much! I wish I had another one. I've used up almost every bit of it and am still hoarding the few scraps I have left. Seriously, how awesome is that bright blue swirly galaxy there in the middle?
So when all was said and done, I had a nice little stack of space themed quilts.
I'm keeping the original version that I made yet, as I think I might sell it someday, but I'm happy to know that the other two, which were sent to their new home just before the baby was born are being used by someone who is new here, and still has so much to discover about this exciting world full of quilts and colours and science fiction.
Love these! I am not a star wars fan myself, but my husband would totally want one of these.
