Its been awhile since I've posted about a quilt. Its been all 'birthday-this and gluten-free that' around here lately, and I have to remind myself that when I started this blog the whole point was to talk and show pictures of stuff I make.
And I'm pretty much always making. But there have been so many fun kid-related milestones and celebrations of late that I've got a bit of a back log of stuff recently finished items.
So today I bring you a baby quilt. Its a very simple little quilt really, a small Single Irish Chain, just a little bigger than standard crib size. Of all the traditional quilt patterns, the Irish Chain in all its variations is one I like most. Or if not most, I like it an awful lot. Above you can see the front of the quilt.
And here's the back (isn't that a great fabric? Vintage, natch).
And the front again, but this time a detail shot. Its made almost entirely of vintage bed sheets. Only the binding, a plain salmon-y pink is from the actual fabric store) Its a gift for a friend of mine from work who is having an eagerly anticipated baby girl (any day now in fact). I told her I wanted to make a quilt for her baby, and then I took my own advice and sat down with her to plan it.
Really (and this is my best bit of sewing/making/giving advice so listen up) when you make a gift for someone that is going to take a long time and you want them to like it, make sure you are making what they want! I went over to the mommy-to-be's house with a whole box full of fabric and a book full of quilt pictures and together we picked out the fabrics and the colours. She was very easy to work with, and did give me a lot of leeway, but most of all, I wanted to be sure that she liked it.
And I'm glad to say she was happy with the finished product. And it was nice to make a sweet, simple quilt (as opposed to re-inventing the wheel as I often like to do) in a manageable size out of such fun fabrics. Pink, wheeee! I don't work with pink very often, but it was really fun to do so this time.
This is such a pretty quilt. I love the back fabric as well!!
