Do you feel that? Do you feel it? I do. It feels like spring is coming. And not a moment too soon. I was beginnig to have serious doubts that I would survive this winter. And I know, I know they are forcasting snow for Tuesday (shakes fist at the heavens) but this weekend it felt like spring. We even went outside. FOR FUN! Because we FELT LIKE IT! And we only wore light jackets. People, there are no two more beautiful words in the English language (in Canada at least) than "light jacket". Now, the woods these day don't look like much...
...things are mostly bare and brown and boringly monochromatic. (Just for reference, if you go to this post about fern gully, you will see this same view in the third picture down, when it is all green and lovely at the height of summer)
But even though it looked dull and uninspiring I'm telling you, it felt like heaven.
And there were bits of colour, here and there, if you knew where to look.
There is always beauty somewhere; the barren, sculptural beauty of an uprooted, well weathered tree was enjoyed by all. The Little Dude actually pointed this out. "I LOVE this tree!" he declared, "its so spooky!"
And there was evidence of wildlife to be found. I think this might have been a muskrat at work. The tooth-marks look a bit too small for beaver.
We had to stop under this big tree...
...to marvel at the huge number of discarded beech nut shells. It was obviously where the squirels ate their dinner all winter.
Speaking of eating, what's a trip out into the woods if you can't stop for a "snack picnic." or should that be "snicnic"? "Snacknic"? Its just begging for its own word. (also note that the Little Dude brought his favourite friend, Hopkins the bunny along, but I told him he was only allowed to accompany us if he stayed snuggly, safely and driely carried kangaroo style in his jacket. To which he complied quite gamely, through the entire walk as you'll see.)
This walk involved many of our favourite "going for a walk" activities, such as sitting on logs. And brandishing sticks.
And of course a stop at the peek-a-boo tree.
And at the end of our walk we found the surest sign of spring. Snowdrops! Or as the Little Guy said "Look Mom! Dose drip flowers!"
I know I take pictures of these every year, and post them on the blog. Its hardly a novelty here. But I'm always just so delighted to see them. They give me hope every year. Such a sweet, delicate little gift of spring.
Beautiful blog! Makes me "feel" spring!
